Virginia Wrestling wins 7th straight dual meet, 9-1 on the season

No. 20 Cavaliers Down Appalachian State, 29-12

UVa wins at seven of 10 weight classes, scores bonus points in four classes

Dear Friends,

This past weekend we took on the current Southern Conference champion Appalachian State program down in Boone, NC. We knew going into the dual meet that we had our work cut out for us. They have had a very good season (they were 11-3 coming into the match) and have two wrestlers ranked in the top 12 nationally. To add a little more pressure we took the trip down without two of our top guys. Both Matt Nelson (ranked 20th at 133) and Jon Fausey (ranked 14th at 184) on on the mend and didn't compete this weekend. So, in short, I was very impressed again with our guys. They continued to wrestle tough and looked to score points in bunches. As you know, this has been a focus for our program this season and we continue to see great results b/c of this mindset. I have attached the link to the official release, but here is my short recap of each bout:

125: Matt Snyder was unable to compete due to an injury for this dual. We expect him back soon though.

133: Joe Martinez filled in for Matt Nelson and did a spectacular job. He racked up 16 points using a variety of different takedowns and turns. He really looked great. He's so fun to watch b/c he has a great motor, never gets tired and is fearless. He'll pretty much try anything out there on the mat. At one point in this bout, he took a shot, got stuffed, hit a snap down and tried to re-attack and then hit an over/under pancake and put his opponent to his back for a five point move. He did this in matter of 10 seconds. I don't know many guys that can wrestle like that!

141: Nick Nelson took on a very tough opponent in Mike Kessler. Kessler has been around for a long time and has 30 wins on the season so we knew this match would be tightly contested. Nick was able to get a reversal and ride out his opponent for a solid and controlled 3-0 win.

149: Gus Sako just continues to amaze us more and more each week. His opponent, Sava Kostis, is a tough, powerful kid and somebody that is not easy to score on at all. But Gus went right out and hit a hip toss to start the match and never looked back. He ended the match w/ a major decision and upped his record to 16-5 on the year.

157: Jedd Moore was put on one of the most impressive performances of the night earning a technical fall victory. It is extremely difficult to tech fall anyone, let alone a tough competitor, so we were very happy w/ what Jedd did out there. He was able to put together shots from both sides and locked up a beautiful cradle for 5 points to end the match and get the tech.

165: Nick Sulzer took on #11 ranked Kyle Blevins of App State in what was the most closely contested bout of the night. In the first period Nick got in on two very nice sweep singles but was unable to finish. In the second period w/ the score at 1-0 Blevins, Nick got in on yet another deep shot but was unable to finish on the edge of the mat. In the third period Nick choose bottom and got in a crazy scramble and ended up on his back. This mistake was the difference in the match. The ref awarded a 3 point nearfall and that put the match out of reach. Nick obviously has to work on a few specific positions, but we were very happy w/ his approach and effort in the bout. He hand fought hard and took several shots and we can never be upset when our guys are the aggressor. One thing we constantly tell our kids is to ask themselves after the match "did I learn and did I get better"....after this match, if Nick asked himself this, he could answer with an honest YES. He took another step in his journey irregardless of the outcome and we are excited to get back to work w/ him this week.

174: Vin "the pin" Waldhauser lived up to his nickname and earned a big fall that got the momentum of the dual right back in our favor. Vinny came out and scored on two takedowns and started racking up riding time fast. In the second period he went right for the big move and earned the fall in 4:05. It has been really neat to see Vinny's development. He is only a first year here....can't wait to see him in a few years. It could be scary.

184: Another first year, Nick Kidd, filled in for Jon Fausey at this weight. It was Nick's first time in the starting line up for us this season and he was so pumped for the opportunity. He fought hard but in the end lost 8-3 to #10 ranked Austin Trotman (who is one of the most talented kids in the nation at this weight).

197: Ryan Malo got back on track w/ a 10-2 major decision at this weight. Ryan has competed against some great kids as of late, so it was really nice to see him get back into his positions out there. He did a nice job on top and controlled the bout from the second period on.

Hwt: Derek Papp won by a score of 5-2. The bout was close late in the third period w/ the score at 3-2 in Derek's favor but he was able to ice the win w/ a go behind takedown late to push his record to 9-2 on the season.

We take on top 25 ranked Old Dominion this weekend so there is no rest for the weary here. ODU is a "hot" team right now and our guys need to be ready. Please come out and watch us at Mem Gym at 2pm this Sunday. Till then, here is the official release on our team's performance:

No. 20 UVa. wrestling wins 6th straight dual meet, knocks off Rutgers 24-12

Gus Sako defeats #5 ranked Mario Mason, Nick Sulzer beats #13 ranked Scott Winston!

Dear Friends,

We had an incredibly trying stretch last week. We had injuries pop up with two of our best athletes, moral was down a bit and we had just come off of an emotionally exhausting win over #13 Maryland. Admittedly, we were all worn out in a lot of ways heading into this match w/ Rutgers. This team is always tough and we have been beat by them badly in the past. We have a history w/ them and we know how talented they are. They had four nationally ranked wrestlers in their line up heading into the dual meet (two of which have been in the top ten most of the year) so we knew we had our work cut out for us. That all said, our guys stepped up yet again and showed the all the attributes that have contributed to one of our most successful dual seasons in the history of our program. I have said this to you all before (perhaps too often), but our guys really are a special group. The culture on the team right now is exactly what we want our program to be. I couldn't be prouder of our guys. In the end they were able to pound out 7 individual wins out of the ten weights. Copied below are the links to the media releases (including the video highlights from the local news), but as always here are my personal thoughts on the match:

125: Due to an injury to #11 ranked Matt Snyder, we had to make a decision late in the week that he couldn't compete. Matt should be back soon, but there just wasn't enough time after Maryland to get him ready. Thus, we had to forfeit the weight and were down 6-0 to start the dual.

133: Top 20 ranked Matt Nelson was also out w/ an injury and we had to make another move late in the week. First year Joseph Martinez knew he had to step up and get the momentum turned quickly for us. He had so much pressure on him....I could feel it on him as I drilled with him in the pre match practice. He had all his teammates looking to him and boy did he deliver. He started the match off w/ a double leg takedown in the first 10 seconds of the bout and kept the heat on from there. Joe has had an impressive first year campaign (winning the Mat Town tournament, finishing runner up at the NC State Open and placing at the Southern Scuffle) so he's certainly a very good wrestler. But what impressed us was his poise. He grew up a lot during this week of preparation and it will undoubtedly pay dividends for him the rest of his career.

141: Nick Nelson continues his tear....he was matched up against a very tough kid in Billy Ashnault. Ashnault is a guy that has been around for a very long time and is very hard to wrestle. He's great in the handfight, good on top and very hard to score on. Nick was able to get his offense going early though and grit out another solid win for us. Nick is 20-2 on the year and ranked as high as 8th in the nation right now.

149: Gus Sako was one of the big stories of the night. He is just flat out very good. Tough mentally, highly skilled and has a great outlook on competing. He wrestles w/ no fear! If you have ever seen him compete, you can see that mentality right away. He went out against the #5 ranked guy in the nation (Mario Mason whose record entering the bout was 16-1) and takes him down in the first minute of the match. Racks up a ton of riding time and never looked back. He made one silly mistake at the very end of the match and gave up a reversal, but other than that he wrestled a great match and controlled most of the way. Gus now has 3 wins against top 20 ranked guys...he better get ranked this week or I might pop a gasket!!

157: Jedd Moore lived up to his nickname "machine" this weekend, coming up w/ a technical fall victory 15-0. Jedd scored most of his points this bout from the top position which was great to see. We pride ourselves on being one of the best teams in the nation from top, so it was great to see Jedd getting turns from this position and scoring points in bunches.

165: The big story of the night came from Nick Sulzer. Nick was one point away from beating #2 ranked (and undefeated) Josh Asper of Maryland last week, but couldn't finish off the upset. This week, he didn't let same opportunity slip away. Nick used his re-shot to get two takedowns on one of the most explosive wrestlers in the nation (Scott Winston) and seal the win. Nick has had a heck of a stretch of late and now has to take on #11 ranked Blevins from App State this coming weekend. He's used to this type of grind however, coming from the St. Edward program in Ohio and he's excited for another challenge.

174: This was one of the more frustrating bouts of the night for us. First year Vinny Waldhauser came out on fire and was up 4-1 on #17 ranked Zanetti (who boasts a 23-3 record on the year). He just made some silly freshman mistakes and pretty much let his opponent back in the match. He ended up losing a wild one 9-8. The difference was literally 8 seconds of riding-time. Vinny has shown shimmers of brilliance this year and really has come a long long way since August...but he knows he has to tighten up this mistakes and was right back in the room today at 7am working on getting better. He's a great kid and we hold him to a very high standard. His teammates love him and have vowed to help him through this tough stretch as well. Stay tuned...

184: Jon Fausey looked great and scored on a variety of takedowns to earn a major decision bonus point victory for the team. Jon is now 18-3 on the year.

197: Ryan Malo lost in another wild one w/ another nationally ranked wrestler in Danny Rinaldi. Rinaldi is a beast and is good from all three positions. Ryan wrestled him tough but the difference in the match was a takedown in the first and a crucial reversal in the last period that cost Ryan.

Hwt: Derek Pap finished off the dual win w/ a solid 4-0 victory. He did a good job from the top position in this bout but didn't open up as much as we are used to seeing. We are expecting some big points from his this coming weekend.

#22 UVA upsets #13 Maryland, Jon Fausey blows the roof off of Mem Gym!!!!

Dear Friends,

Yesterday was one of the coolest things I have ever been a part of. Not just b/c the outcome of the dual meet was a win (trust me, that was big too...Maryland is a very very tough team), but because I saw a group of men come together with total focus and drive to accomplish a goal they had set for themselves. I saw a group of kids believing in themselves, believing in their training, believing in their coaching and not letting anything stand in their way. On paper we weren't supposed to win that dual meet. In recent history w/ that team, we have always "lost close" but not found a way to win...well that stopped yesterday!! Our kids came together and pulled off a huge win in front of their home crowd. I told them after the match to just simply enjoy it. I wanted them to enjoy the fruit of their labor. They earned it.

Quick recap: Matt Snyder came out and defeated a very tough opponent in Matt Gentry 7-0 to start the dual meet off right and our guys never looked back. At the next weight (133) Matt Nelson gutted out a nail biter w/ star freshman Geoff Alexander to keep the momentum going. Then Nick Nelson, always solid as a rock, came out and does what he usually does. He controlled the tempo of the match, minimized mistakes and defeated a good kid in the process. Then came a huge major decision win for Gus Sako. Gus is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated wrestlers in the entire country. His opponents don't seem to respect him until he is winning by 7 or 8 points..then you can see the look on their faces as if to say "geez...who is this kid?". We think Gus has tons of star power and is one of most exciting guys within our program to watch. Jedd Moore just kept the momentum rolling with a big upset win over previously top ten ranked Kyle John of Maryland. John is flat out a total stud and for Jedd to get this win really made a statement. Much like Jedd, somebody forgot to tell Nick Sulzer that he was facing undefeated and #2 ranked Josh Asper of Maryland in the next bout. Nick took Asper down as the buzzer sounded in the second period to tie the match up 3-3. Nick let up an escape in the third period however and lost a very close 4-3 decision. Nick is getting closer and closer. Maryland picked up a bonus point win of their own before Jon Fausey ignited the crowd w/ perhaps the biggest fall in our programs dual meet history. When he got the pin I actually think people were passing out in the stands they were so happy (only half kidding here). It was awesome!! This pin iced the match for us and lifted a huge weight off our shoulders. It was a heck of a day. A big thank you to all who were in attendance. The crowd was as fired up as I've ever seen them and our kids fed off of your energy.
