Yesterday I sent out an reminder about our annual fall wrestling reunion event that takes place Friday, October 15th at the house of longtime UVa supporters John and Trula Wright. After sending it, I began to think about reasons why people would come back. This sparked the content for this week's blog:
The first thought that came to my mind is that it is just flat out a lot of fun. Who doesn't enjoy reminiscing about the "good ol days" with your former teammates? I love hearing all the war stories from the different decades represented. There is nothing more enjoyable for me than seeing old friends catch up. So many times since my return to Charlottesville, I have seen these events bring people back together that haven't seen each other in many years. Life is all about relationships, and to see these relationships started back up again, is truly a treat of my job.
The second thought I had was that when you choose to come back and attend one of these types of events, what you are really doing is making a declaration of support for that specific sports program. When you decide to make plans and take a trip back down to Charlottesville to attend any UVa wrestling event, you are choosing to go "all in" with our team. Our fundraising and development team here at UVa takes note of this. Our administration takes note of this. Our coaching staff and student athletes take note of this. Make no mistake, you being here really matters to us and it matters to our athletic department as whole. So, I want to encourage all our friends and alumni again to get back for our reunion event next Friday. It will not only be a great time..it will be a meaningful way to show your support for our wrestling program and UVa athletics.
Go Hoos!
Coach Garland
